Where has the time gone?

I can't believe that Colton will be 5 months old in just a few days! He keeps surprising me with all of his new developments and honestly, I only have half a brain as I do my best to keep after two little kids so I shouldn't be too surprised! For starters, we are moving to South Carolina in two weeks and have been busy preparing our house to rent out while we are gone. It's been difficult to accept because we love our house, friends, and Austin is freaking awesome, but we are excited for this new adventure! I have only heard great things about Greenville!

Okay, on to the kiddos!
Raylee turned two a couple months ago and has definitely entered the "terrible twos" ;) She is still a sweetheart and we are loving all the new things she can do! She is learning words left and right, making small sentences, loves to play outside and dance, and is constantly asking me, "Where's Dadda?" She sure does love her Daddy! She is also super tall, measuring at 3 feet already!

Colton is just about 5 months old but he is as big as all the 9 month olds in our ward! At his last doctor's appointment a few weeks ago he weighed 15 lbs! He does full rolls and tries really hard to scoot around. I will be surprised to find him a few feet away from where I had laid him down! He finds Raylee to be hilarious and the two of them get along great. Over all, he is such a calm and sweet boy!

Colton's Birth Story: My natural, Hypnobabies experience

So Colton just turned 2 months old a few days ago and I cannot believe how quickly the time has gone by! Most of his pregnancy seemed to fly by as well and I think that's due to the fact that Raylee keeps me so busy! She is such an active little girl. And in case you were wondering, it is true that you become so much more relaxed with your second child! (At least it's true for me)

Our precious son, Colton Covington Hefner was born on May 9, 2015.

I'll start off by saying that I began this pregnancy with the same plan as I did with Raylee's, to get an epidural and there was no way I could handle (or even want to) giving birth naturally. I didn't have any problems with my epidural with Raylee and it did make me very comfortable during my long labor since I was induced. However, her birth was very stressful to say the least and I knew that I wanted things to be different for Colton's birth. That's when I began to explore the idea of going natural and looking into different birthing techniques. I knew that if I wasn't prepared with some sort of skills, I would give into the epidural again. After doing a ton of research and reading every birth story I could, I decided that I would use the Hypnobabies Home Study 5-week course to help me prepare.  I also hired a doula and she was amazing!

Waiting for Colton to arrive was excruciating! His due date was May 3rd and every day that passed after then felt like a year! I had been having inconsistent contractions for a week or so and I really thought that he would be coming any day. Then on Friday, May 8th I woke up having mild contractions pretty consistently. I took a bath and sure enough, they were still coming! I was really thinking (and hoping) that this was the day! My doctor told me to come in and get checked out and I had Aaron come home early from work.

To my disappointment, the contractions started to become very irregular again and by the time we got to the doctor's office, they had almost stopped. I was very frustrated and embarrassed by this point! My doctor checked me out and found that I was 2cm dilated, so that was good news to hear! She stripped my membranes and afterwards said that she would be surprised if I didn't deliver by Monday. Feeling determined, Aaron and I drove to a mall and walked and walked to try to get things moving. Things were still very irregular but the contractions I was feeling were much stronger, so I kept my spirits up!

The next morning, May 9th was a typical Saturday morning. Nothing had really changed yet so I took the opportunity to sleep in and then took a relaxing, hot bath. After bathing, strong contractions started coming! Aaron timed them for me and they were coming every 10-12 minutes apart, then 5-8 minutes apart. They weren't as consistent as I thought they would be so I called my doula, Katie, to get her input. I was feeling very comfortable still and I didn't want to have another false alarm. Katie got to our house about 30ish minutes later and all of a sudden, contractions were coming exactly 3 minutes apart and were feeling much stronger! I was having to really focus through each contraction so we decided we better get to the hospital!

The 20 minute drive to the hospital went much smoother than I had expected. I just put my headphones in and listened to my Hypnobabies tracks to help me get in my "zone" and stay really calm. The nurses at the hospital didn't believe I could be in active labor yet because I was still walking around and talking easily but sure enough, they checked me and I was already 6cm dilated! Music to my ears!

Labor was still very manageable and I was still feeling pretty comfortable. When a contraction would come I would simply close my eyes, and get into my "zone". Afterwards I would open my eyes again and return to talking with Aaron, Katie, and the nurses. I chose to have a hep-lock IV and fetal monitoring 20 minutes of every hour so that I could still walk around and move when I needed to. About an hour and a half after getting to the hospital I was finally settled in and could go stand in the shower, which is what I was waiting to do. Oh my goodness, the shower helped so much! It totally took the edge off and really helped me to relax even more.

After getting out of the shower I could tell that things were very different. The pressure I was feeling from the contractions were getting very intense and I was having to work hard to stay focused. Contractions were coming close to a minute apart and I knew that I must be transition (which is one of the toughest parts of labor) This photo was taken about 30 minutes before Colton was born.

I had the nurse call my doctor to check me and as I expected, I was fully dilated and ready to push! This is when I began to lose my focus and I was feeling really scared. My water had not broke yet and my doctor asked me if I wanted to try delivering with the amniotic sac still intact or if I wanted her to break it. She told me that it might be more difficult to push out the baby with the amniotic sac so I quickly responded with, "Yes, break it!!"

Pushing was the most difficult part for me. Things were moving so quickly that I totally lost all of my focus and this was the first time that I began to show distress and cry. I remember saying, "I can't do this" and hearing Aaron and Katie encouraging me to keep going. To me, it felt like he wasn't going to get out. Pushing lasted between 15-20 minutes and at 8:44pm (3 hours after arriving at the hospital) Colton was born!

He was 8lbs 9oz and 21 inches long. Big boy!

This was truly such an amazing experience! I had so much support from Aaron during this entire process and having Katie there also really helped me! My labor was exactly what I hoped it would be, calm, quick, and uncomplicated. I highly recommend Hypnobabies to anyone who may be looking into birthing techniques to help with labor.

Pregnancy Tracker: Week 17

Happy (late) Thanksgiving!!

It was a wonderful week for many reasons! First off, Aaron had a short week at work and only went in on Monday and Tuesday. Then we jumped into the car right after he got home Tuesday night to drive to Houston. Actually, that drive went pretty horrible unexpectedly. We were about 30 minutes into the drive when poor Raylee threw up all over herself, her car seat, and the backseat! It took us awhile to get her and the car cleaned up but we decided to continue on the drive. I sat with her in the back the rest of the way so I could (hopefully) catch it if she got sick again. My prayers were answered and we got to Houston without any more delays.

Once we arrived in Houston things got a lot better! It was so good to spend time with Aaron's brother and his wife, David and Jessica! We also got to spend time with Jessica's family and that is always a treat :) The rest of the week was filled with happy times and AMAZING food, which is all I could wish for during Thanksgiving break!

So this photo was technically taken at 18 weeks, but since it was early in the week I thought I would let it slide as 17 weeks. Oh yeah, and I cut my hair again! Shorter!

How far along: 17 weeks
Baby is the size of a: Pomegranate
Favorite moment this week: Being with family and eating lots and lots of food! Jessica is 37 weeks pregnant with her first so it was really exciting to see them getting ready to meet their baby girl soon!
Miss anything: Nope!
Movement: Yes, I got a pretty big kick after my Thanksgiving meal. I think baby boy was thanking me! How thoughtful :)
Food cravings: Same old. Apples, potato chips, anything I don't have to make myself...
Total weight gain: 3 lbs
Sleep:I think it's safe to say I need a good 10 hours a night to function properly, and sometimes I still pass out for a nap when I least expect it.
Stretch marks: No
Happy or moody: Happy!!
Looking forward to: All I can think about right now is bedtime...and Christmas.

Pregnancy Tracker: Week 16

I know, I know. I totally skipped over week 15. Our family was unfortunate to come across a nasty sickness that has been going around. With Aaron getting sick twice and Raylee having her molars come in, I felt like a wreck! I was also helping with my good friend's baby shower and so whatever free time I had was spent on getting decorations ready. I'm glad last week is over!

I had my 16 week appointment last week and it was so good to hear baby boy's heartbeat again! I have also been noticing my energy levels going up the past few days so I'm very excited about that! And don't forget that appetite! I can't seem to eat enough. I find myself starving again just an hour after every meal! Luckily I have been loving good things like honeycrisp apples and sandwiches instead of sweets. That's all I ever wanted during Raylee's pregnancy!

I have also loved feeling more and more baby kicks! Aaron even felt a kick a few nights ago!

How far along: 16 weeks
Baby is the size of a: Dill Pickle
Favorite moment this week: Going to the doctor's and hearing the heartbeat! It's so refreshing to hear during these early weeks when movement isn't as consistent.
Miss anything: Not really!
Movement: Yes and I love it!
Food cravings: Apples and I have been dying to go to Arby's. I'm pretty sure I could eat a French Dip and a Chicken Bacon Swiss in one sitting...
Total weight gain: 3 lbs
Sleep: I have a little more energy but I still need a lot of sleep in order to function haha
Showing yet: Yes
Stretch marks: No
Happy or moody: Happy for the most part :)
Looking forward to: I'm really excited to get to the 20 week mark in a few weeks! Officially being halfway there feels like an accomplishment to me!

Until next week!

Pregnancy Tracker: Week 14

Once again, this past week has flown by. It was a pretty typical week in the Hefner home but I like having normal, uneventful weeks every once in awhile. We are really looking forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas so we can get the chance to spend time with family!

How far along: 14 weeks
Baby is the size of a: Lemon
Favorite moment this week: It's not really pregnancy related but Aaron and I met up for a lunch date at Olive Garden! I love Olive Garden and I have trying to hold out eating there until I was feeling confident I wouldn't get sick. I took my chances and even though I didn't feel well enough to eat as many breadsticks as I usually do, it was still totally worth it!
Miss anything: Nothing new, I'm just looking forward to feeling better
Movement: Yes, a few nudges here and there :)
Food cravings: I noticed having more cravings for random restaurants like Rudy's, Olive Garden, and IHop. But, I love eating out so who knows if that's the baby talking ;)
Total weight gain: I don't know, I don't have a scale haha!
Sleep: Sleeping lots and lots!
Showing yet: Yes
Stretch marks: No
Happy or moody: I might have been a little more moody or quiet this week, like crying over overcooked cookies...
Looking forward to: Right now....bedtime! Zzzzz

Pregnancy Tracker: Week 13

Wow! What a week this has been! I have been feeling the morning sickness ease off more, we found out the gender of our baby, and made our official announcement! I was really hoping that we would get the genetic results from our doctor sometime this week but she had told me it could take 2 weeks or more for them to come in! I have a really hard time waiting for news like that so it was very difficult for me to hold in the anxiety. But sure enough, the results came in 8 days later and everything looks great! Oh yeah, and it's a BOY! (I was really hoping for a boy haha)

Funny story about that day:
That morning I saw that I was getting a phone call from the doctor's office. I knew they would be calling the day they get the results in so as I answered I was totally freaking out inside!

"Hi Kelsey, this is so & so from OBGYN North"
             (Yeah......I know!)
"I'm just calling to remind you to set your 16 week appointment"

Oh my disappointment! The level of disappointment I felt just proves how anxious I was. Anyways, I went on with my day and to my surprise a couple hours later I get yet another call from the doctor!
I'm thinking, "Yeah okay, what else could you be calling me about?? I'm not ready to set my appointment yet!"

Lo and behold, it was my awaited phone call! She went through the test results with me and explained that all abnormalities came back as low risk and then finally asked me if I would like to know the gender. YES, YES, YES! I'm glad that I sounded happy and excited when she told me it was a boy! I would love to give expecting parents that happy news!

So here we are on Halloween night. I think it's safe to say I am beginning to show :) This dress really shows off the bump so regular clothes does look a little different. But it is beginning!

How far along: 13 weeks
Baby is the size of a: Jalapeno Pepper
Favorite moment this week: Finding out we are expecting a son. Aaron is super excited of course and I think Raylee will do great with a baby brother!

Movement: I might have felt something, but I can't say for certain
Food cravings: Potato chips....extra salty
Total weight gain: I don't know
Sleep: Horrible! I'm still super exhausted but I have been sleeping terribly! Not really sure why.
Showing yet: Yes haha
Stretch marks: No
Happy or moody: Happy happy! And always ready for a nap :)
Looking forward to: Tomorrow I will be 14 weeks and officially in the 2nd trimester! Yay!

Pregnancy Tracker: Week 12

So first of all, I think I may be the worst blogger of all time. I should have seen this coming because I'm even worse at writing in a journal. My poor kids are going to have no records of their mother except for things that I wrote when I was like 8 years old....and that was really important stuff. So I've accepted my faults and I am ready to try once again! I have really been wanting to do better with documenting my next pregnancy because I only have a few pictures of Raylee's pregnancy. That being said....

We are pregnant with baby #2!!

Okay so if you happen to stumble upon this deserted blog, lucky you! You are hearing the news before we make our public announcement. But please keep it quiet for just a few more weeks :)

How far along: 12 weeks!
Baby is the size of a: Lime
Favorite moment this week: Having our first ultrasound! I was amazed at how developed the baby is already! Baby has arms, legs, and the cutest little face :) Plus, the due date got bumped up 5 days!
Miss anything: I love breadsticks and I have NOT been able to tolerate any kind of bread these last few weeks. I love my carbs!
Movement: Nothing yet
Food cravings: Potato chips is my biggest craving right now
Total weight gain: Haven't gained weight yet
Sleep: I am very tired all the time so I sleep about 10-11 hours a night. I am lucky that Raylee sleeps so well! I still wake up for potty breaks twice a night.
Showing yet: I think I still look bloated but I can feel my uterus starting to come out
Stretch marks: Nope
Happy or moody: Very happy this week!! The ultrasound has put me in a happy, hopeful mood!
Looking forward to: I am very excited to get to the next trimester and find out the gender soon!
